Short metatarsals

This page focuses on short metatarsals as a morphologic feature of conditions that may also be associated with psychiatric manifestations, such as psychosis, mania, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, OCD, and self-injurious behaviours. The page begins with a clinical definition of short metatarsals based on the standardized Elements of Morphology terminology, together with visual examples from the same source. Of note, to optimize clinical utility, the list does not include conditions associated with intellectual disability in the absence of other psychiatric features.

Short metatarsals

Definition

Subjective: Diminished length of a metatarsal, with resultant proximal displacement of the associated toe.

Note: This is a subjective assessment and one that generally compares the position of the MTP joint to that of the contralateral digit or the putatively shortened ray in proportion to the other rays.
