Submucous cleft palate

This page focuses on submucous cleft palate as a morphologic feature of conditions that may also be associated with psychiatric manifestations, such as psychosis, mania, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, OCD, and self-injurious behaviours. The page begins with a clinical definition of submucous cleft palate based on the standardized Elements of Morphology terminology, together with visual examples from the same source. This is followed by a list of conditions in which submucous cleft palate has been described in association with psychiatric manifestations.
Of note, to optimize clinical utility, the list does not include conditions associated with intellectual disability in the absence of other psychiatric features.

Submucous cleft palate

Definition
Objective: Soft palatal defect with intact overlying mucosa comprising two of the following three findings: (1) notching of the posterior border of the hard palate, (2) bifid uvula, or (3) muscular diastasis leading to a midline translucent zone or furrow in the soft palate.
Note: The notch of the posterior hard palate can sometimes be palpated.
